Copper bathtubs are made by heating copper sheets (15 – 18 gauge) and then hammering them into shape according to the design and size of the intended bathtub. This is a handmade process that results in many natural variations and imperfections that cannot be predicted or removed from the finished product, and therefore each handmade tub may vary slightly in color and dimensions.
Gauge means density – the thickness of the copper sheet from which the copper tub is made, where on a scale between 15 (1.5mm) – 18 (1mm) gauge, 15 is both thicker and heavier.
Over time, copper naturally changes colours, known as the patina process, giving your bath its own unique colour, known as patina. This patina actually protects the metal underneath from corrosion and gives it a wonderful blend of light and dark tones that is different for every bathtub.
